The Origins of Manacled

Between 2018 and 2019, SenLinYu published Manacled chapter by chapter on Archive of Our Own. The story is set in an alternate Harry Potter universe where Voldemort wins, Harry Potter is dead, and Hermione is forced to survive in a brutal dystopia.

What makes Manacled truly remarkable is its nonlinear structure. The narrative is told through fragmented timelines and flashbacks, slowly piecing together the bigger picture. At first, it feels unbearably dark—so much so that readers might wonder how it could ever become a romance. Yet, as the story unfolds, the threads of a profound love story emerge.

Dramione, Darkness, and Visual Storytelling

At its heart, Manacled is a Dramione romance—a story about Hermione Granger and Draco Malfoy. It is not an easy romance, but one filled with trauma, war, and devastating choices. This complexity is exactly what captivated thousands of readers across the globe.

Adding to the immersive experience were the atmospheric illustrations by Avendell, which visually brought the story’s haunting tone to life. For many, this combination of powerful writing and evocative artwork made Manacled unforgettable.

From Fanfiction to Original Novel: The Alchemist / Alchemised

In 2024, SenLinYu announced that she would reimagine Manacled as an original fantasy novel. To distance the book from Harry Potter’s intellectual property, the author created an entirely new world and new characters.

The result is The Alchemist (later renamed Alchemised), a novel that keeps the themes of memory, war, and forbidden love but transplants them into a universe built on alchemy, necromancy, and dark magic.

Can Alchemised Live Up to Manacled?

This is the big question for fans. On one hand, the Harry Potter backdrop gave Manacled a familiar emotional anchor that is now gone. On the other hand, Alchemised offers the chance to present the story to a much wider audience, proving that its power lies not in borrowed characters but in SenLinYu’s writing itself.

Manacled is not for the faint of heart. It is dark, graphic, and emotionally intense, but it has proven that fanfiction can reach the same literary heights as original fiction. Now, with The Alchemist / Alchemised, the story is set to take on new life—one that may resonate with an even broader readership.
